There are many benefits of incorporating lemon water into your diet and this citrus-infused drink can support your overall wellness. Discover why a glass of lemon water might be the perfect addition to your morning routine and how it can contribute to a healthier you.

KIDNEY STONES

Kidney stones are hard crystals that form and build up in the kidneys. They can cause severe pain and the risk of recurrence is high. In the long term, kidney stones can harm kidney function. Citrus fruits like lemons contain citrates, which help decrease the formation of kidney stones. Citrates are the most important inhibitors of the precipitation of the Calcium-Oxalate complex, the composition of the most frequent from of kidney stones.

VITAMIN C

Lemon juice is a good source of vitamin C. This vitamin has many important functions in the body. These include participating in the synthesis of collagen, boosting iron absorption by converting it in its reduced form, detoxifying medications, carcinogens and polluants such as heavy metals and pesticides, decreasing free radicals in the body as it is an antioxidant, improving wound healing and the maintenance of the immune response. This is why vitamin C from fruits and vegetables could contribute to decrease cancer incidence (esophagus, pharynx, mouth, stomach) and cardiovascular disease.

Women need 75mg of vitamin C per day and men need 90mg per day. Smokers need that amount plus 35mg. The juice of half a lemon equals to about 2 tablespoons, which gives 12mg of vitamin C first thing in the morning, representing 16% (women) and 13% (men) of the recommended daily intake.

DIGESTION

Drinking lemon water before your breakfast may also help improve digestion. The citric acid in lemon juice boosts the gastric acid secretion, a digestive fluid produced in the stomach that helps digest the food.

A glass of water first thing in the morning also help to keep you hydrated, which aids to regulate bowel movements and prevent constipation.

CONCLUSION

Adding lemon water to your daily routine is a great way to stay hydrated and support your health. It helps with digestion and gives you a boost of vitamin C, while reducing your risk of forming kidney stones.
